Countywide Transportation

Although efforts around the transportation issue had started as early as 1998 with formal needs studies, the recommendations were essentially not moved forward. In 2006, the MHSC charged a committee to take up the issue of countywide transportation again- this committee came to be known as the Montcalm Countywide Transit Initiative. In December 2008, a countywide transportation system proposal (called The Montcalm Ride) was presented to the Montcalm County Board of Commissioners for their consideration. Over that next year, Montcalm Countywide Transit Initiative members made more than 40 presentations throughout the county to inform the public and get feedback to the proposal. On December 21, 2009 the Montcalm County Commissioners approved Articles of Incorporation for a Public Transportation Authority, thereby establishing  Montcalm County's first Public Transportation Authority. For current Authority activity information, contact Chairperson Franz Mogdis at (616) 225-6275.

211

2-1-1 is a three digit phone number people can call to get help and give help.

In October 2009 the MHSC (along with Ionia and Barry Counties) endorsed HandsOn Battle Creek as a Call Center to provide 211 services to Montcalm County.

Service is projected to begin in Spring, 2011.

We are currently working on getting community resource information onto their database. Click here to see how to do this.

Community Report Card

In 2005, the MHSC published a community report card about community indicators in health, community safety, education, and economic development. Some of these indicators were updated in 2007.

The original report card document (2005), 2007 updates, and *NEW* 2010 updates are available on-line as PDF files at www.montcalm.org/reportcard.asp

Additional updates will be posted as completed.

FACT Research Grant

In 2006, the MHSC partnered with MSU Extension to apply for a Families and Communities Together research grant available through Michigan State University. The lead researcher was Maryhelen MacInnes. The purpose was to understand the health care needs of the residents and promote maximum utilization of services.

A final report was presented to the MHSC in June 2009. To see a PDF copy of the final report, click here. Next steps are still being determined.
